Posted By Karen Todd Hello all, I've misplaced my PUWER ACOP! Need to know what it says about training, i.e. what training should cover. I could think up a list myself, but need to quote it in a report, so need to know what it actually says. Just bullet points will do, e.g.: - Startup & shutdown - Emergency stopping - Tool change operations - Etc. Thanks, Karen

Posted By Anthony Slinger The Regulation 9 says “adequate training” and the ACoP goes on to define adequate training as “It is not possible to detail here what constitutes “adequate training” (surprise surprise) as requirements will vary according to the job or activity and work equipment. It goes on to say :- In general you will need to:- • Evaluate the existing competence of employees to operate the full range of work equipment that they will use. • Evaluate the competence they need to manage or supervise the use of work equipment and • Train the employee to make up any shortfall between their competence and that required to carry out the work with due regard to health and safety. The ACoP has no prescribed list of things to include in training, so I think you will have to continue your list with the type of equipment, etc the employees will be using. The use of chainsaws has some points to cover on training, however.

Posted By CFT Karen Forgive me for perhaps stating the obvious; can you not have a meeting with the users or supervisors to identify the exact level of training that is necessary (from a technical and operating stance)? If you throw in all the H&S related issues and the operatives identify user requirements, between you, it should create a pretty comprehensive target list and will benefit you in several other ways! I've found this, which is not where I saw it or exactly what I've seen but is essentially the same as the list I was looking for: http://www.hse.gov.uk/wo...king/machinetraining.htm What should a training scheme include? An individual will have been adequately trained when they have completed a training scheme that includes the following: General - The importance of good housekeeping. - Avoiding horseplay. - Isolation procedures before adjusting or maintaining the machine. - Awareness of common dangers like ‘taking off’, ‘dropping-on’ and kickback. - How to report faults. Machine-specific - The main causes of accidents at the machine. - The tasks it is designed for. - What procedures require additional guards or jigs etc. - Safe working practices. - How to use and adjust guards. - How to use protection devices and appliances. - How to select and fit tooling correctly. - Stopping procedures including the use of brakes where fitted. - Personal protective equipment requirements, eg hearing protection, eye protection. - Health risks and how to control them, eg dust extraction. - Job-specific (familiarisation) Training specific to the particular job or task under close supervision (ie on-the-job training).
