Posted By Seano We have 4 exits in our open plan workshop. We have manual call points on 2 of the exits, travel to manual call point from any point in the workshop is less than 45m. It is also fairly easy to spot or be aware if there is a fire in the workshop. Is the citing of 2 call points sufficient? I think the answer is yes.

Posted By Anthony Edwards Seano, I would suggest that the two are sufficient if they are at opposite ends of the shop to facilitate alternative means of escape. Nutty

Posted By Son of SkyWalker In some dealings with Fire and Rescue Service they wanted one at each fire exit.

Posted By Tabs Not every exit has to be designated a fire exit :-) The other two may just be extras.

Posted By pluto Tabs, it doesn't really matter whether the exits are designated as fire exits or not. someone escaping from a fire is unlikely to think "oops this is not a real fire exit, I must go and find one with a panic bar and nice sign". Hence the siting of MCP's at each exit so that escaping people can raise the alarm. Having said that, in a small unit I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Posted By Tabs Yes, Pluto, I have been involved in a few fires and I understand behaviour - I was simply offering a response to a over-enthusiastic brigade stance that I have seen many times. To a brigade officer things are almost always black and white and they don't seem to appreciate the problems we have of getting things funded against common sense. In a small single space, a shout is as effective (or more so) than a bell. Think about the 'false alarms' (that will get complaints I bet) you have witnessed - how many originated from someone shouting "Fire!" ? Regardless of signage, most people will leave by the routes they normally use in simple buildings.

Posted By Son of SkyWalker Tabs You may notice that I said "fire exits" not just exits. So I do not think the Fire and Rescue service were making unreasonable demands. I do not think they were being over enthusiastic but were ultimately looking out for peoples lives.

Posted By shaun mckeever You should not be able to leave the property without being able to raise the alarm. If it is necessary to have an electrical fire alarm system then a call point should be sited adjacent to each exit. It is not the fire brigade who are being over enthusiastic. They are just asking you to comply with the BS.
