Can anyone indicate or recommend any guidelines for renewal of license for the above ISO.
One trainer says that when you go with them they are open ended certificates, one says they recommend 5 years to keep up with legislation

Can't help with the ISO but can confirm that my certificate lasts for 5 years. Or i guess if the company decides it requires renewing any sooner from events that may occur the dictate the need (accident, incident, near miss, lack of use off equipment over a long period)

There are no licences in existance for operating any Plant such as MEWPS. This is a common miss-conception of the industry.
You are required by law to ensure adequate training, information, instruction and supervision.
you are also required to ensure you employ competent people to carry out your undertakings. One way of doing this is to have operators trained and assessed to a nationally recognised standard. If a qualification exists than this would be the preferred option.
So, if a provider says the card expires in 3 or 5 years, that is down to the scheme you have opted into.
It is good practice to ensure competence by having independant assessment of ones ability to perform to a competent standard.
Of course I do get very 'narked' when I hear trainers, etc, using the term 'licence' for plant...
PS: There doe not yet exist a ISO specifying training alone...

Yes and no; IPAF themselves make reference to the word license (possibly to fuel the training requirement) One can be forgiven for using the terminology licence; IPAF after all do just that.
Agree with what you say though; it is a misconception in industry. trouble is many insurers also won't offer cover without that 'licence' bumbled if you do and bumbled if you don't!:-)
