Dear all,

Do you need to attend a refresher course once you have passed IOSH Managing Safely course.

Thanks

It depends (as always). I guess this is a question about competence.

If the knowledge and skills have been used on a regular basis since the initial course, coupled with updates on changing legislation then I would say No.

However, if the skillset and knowledge have lain dormant for a while, maybe.

What responsibilities and duties does the holder have? The answer to that question along with the foregoing should assist in reaching a decision.

There was a short period when IOSH were putting an expiry date on MS certificates, but that seems to have been quietly dropped...

Version 6 used up to last year has now been replaced by the new animated version 3. The recertification course includes detail not formally assessed in the version 6 such as human failure, stress, lone working, violence, culture. So it is up the the trainer and delegates to decide if its required.IOSH did at one point want to put expiry date on original certificates of 3 years but it was not well received so not implemented.

Opinions please: For an office environment with all the usual hazards one would expect, would you see Managing Safely as useful to a person who will potentially become "Safety Officer"? Would it be "enough" of a starter for the role - maybe with the person later taking the NEBOSH Cert?
The prospect of the Cert may be daunting just at the moment for the person I am thinking of.
Your opinions would be valued

The IOSH MS is a cracking course; I have just enrolled 4 of my Building Soup's on it, (caretakers to you and I ).

For what you describe, the MS is a great pre cursor to the Nebosh Cert and does indeed give the person a good grounding before taking the Nebosh route of further education in OHS IMESHO :-).

I have heard that the new IOSH MS course is not very good, and can be considered insulting to the attendees intelligence, is this true? As I am considering applying to provide it at our site.

I have just spent over £2k getting accredited and buying the IOSH course material so we can use it as the standard educational level for our in-house 'competent person'. I too would be interested to hear of the views of this course. The people who will be doing it will be chargehands, caretakers, office managers and similar.

I thought the old course was really good for this type of person.

Hi,
We run the new animated version of managing safely it's recommended for all managers. Upon first viewing it I thought staff would think it too simple/patronising but to my surprise it has been very well received. My guess is that for someone who isn't involved in H&S all the time its refreshingly straightforward.

Why not contact the local provider of MS course and ask to sit in for an hour or so and pick time at random; you can then see for yourself that what you have heard is not the case; it is a basic foundation course and for anyone that has little grasp of H&S related matters, processes, issues etc, it is excellent.

One of my assistants took the MS then went on to Gen Cert (she caught the bug)and is trying to get me to part with funding so that the diploma can be taken next; all this from the IOSH MS course, not three bad indeed.

Robert,

I took the MS course last year after several years of H/S committee involvement I found it very beneficial and have now taken the position of H/S Coordinator for my company I am 62 so don't really see the point of taking the next step at the moment but may change ny mind because I am enjoying my working life more now than ever thanks to IOSH.

Derek.
