Hello,
Has any one come across this one?
We recently had a drivers meeting, raised under H&S was the drivers wanted access to the toilets at the point of delivery.
They run overnight same route, single manned protected by identicom the majority of delivery points have a designated delivery area with a beam they can step through to set the alarms off again giving them protection but not allowing entry to the toilet facilities.
Doesnt the use of twenty four hour service stations suffice?
Dean.

Hi Dean, my own experience of traveling to meet clients is that I invariably need to use the toilet when I arrive - and it gets more pronounced as the years go by. Whilst Motorway service stations etc are great for during the journey, the number of public toilets away from the trunk routes is approaching zero, particularly at night.
Based on common human needs I believe the drivers concerns are legitimate.
It is also reasonable for them to have access to washing facilities and a supply of drinking water in my view.
It is your work activities that the drivers are servicing and therefore you have a duty of care to them. This is expanded by the Workplace Regs 1992.

Hi Dean
I couldn't agree more with David. Access to good, clean toilet/handwashing facilities would be essential for me and somewhere to get a drink of water would be a bonus (although I suspect most delivery drivers carry drinks with them).
You don't say how far off the beaten track your delivery depots are but, again in agreement with David, the further away from the motorway you are the more difficult it is to find suitable facilities and, at night and in the dark you would need to consider the personal safety of the drivers.
As to a solution, is it feasible (at least in some areas) to have an external toilet erected?
Good luck with it.
Aileen

Thank you for your responses we will now look at changing all alarms to allow the drivers to relieve themselves! i love working for a proactive company, just going away to look into the security issues!
Dont you just love this job?
Dean.
