Posted By steven n Did anyone else hear Ray Hurst on the Chris Evans show last night? I feel he missed out a bit on the opportunity to address bonkers conkers by dwelling on health and safety history rather than getting straight to the point.

Posted By John J Not sure I agree. I felt that by doing the history bit it went someway to dismissing the impression that elf & safety has only been around for the last 5 years. There was mention of the bonkers conkers stories and understanding acceptable risk. I suppose time is limited but hopefully it may be the first step in getting a 'resident expert' when similar stories appear. I know Tony Livesy on Radio Lancs often has someone on if there is a story Re H&S and it seems to get over these issues while still being very funny.

Posted By steven n Good point. He did manage to get round to poor risk management eventually but given the limited time he had, I feel he could of addressed the bonkers conkers issue sooner as I think that is where Chris was trying to lead him, but as you rightly point out its a good start.

Posted By Patrick Keady I listen to The Chris Evans Drivetime Show every evening on my way home from work. For me, it helps to wind-down and to catch up with what’s happening elsewhere. I’m guessing this is why some other listeners tune in too. Chris interviews a different expert every evening. Past experts include the author of the Book with the strangest title and a cheese-maker. Neither of these topics are particularly exciting to me, but they are to some other listeners. And they would be a definite turn-off to me if the interviewees decided to get on their hobby-horse. But last night was different. Health & safety is very exciting to me…….. but not to some of Chris’s other interests. Ray was aware of this and acted accordingly. He knew that not all listeners were likely to be fans of health & safety. His key points were 1. health & safety is not just this season’s fashion (!) – it’s been around since 1802 and Inspectors since the 1830s 2. silly h&s stories originate from the decisions of organisations not to do something – and health & safety is used as a ‘good reason’ for not doing it – (sounds like the conkers bonkers argument to me) 3. he practices what he preaches – wearing high-viz jackets, steel toecap boots etc on the building site 4. SHPs don’t need to speak in jargon – he didn’t mention PPE, law, HSE etc 5. safety people are not boring - Ray’s performance was refreshing. He even laughed. He came across just as friendly and relaxed as he is in real-life. And he achieved all of this in a 5-minute interview ….. well done Ray

Posted By Paul Leadbetter At last, an excuse to use 'listen again'; I think Ray did very well keeping it light but to the point. Paul

Posted By mike morland I'm also an avid Radio 2 listener and it was quite refreshing to hear Health & Safety being given some air-time to dispel some of todays myths. I thought Ray put some key points across in the time that he had including the 'conkers bonkers' theme and children no longer employed to sweep chimneys etc. He did make the point that it's not really health and safety it is actually Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). I've read many threads on this site of people's concerns about H&S not being taken seriously. Well perhaps we should start by getting the name of our profession right. Regards

Posted By Neil Budworth I thought Ray did a fantastic job last night. It's always really difficult to get over the points and to engage with the audience. Great job Ray ! Don't forget the IOSH media team as well. These things don't just drop into your lap ! Good job all - great to hear a positive note on a national platform. Best Regards Neil

Posted By Aidan Toner Pity I missed the interview....can picture our man doing a good job as testified by others..well done. It's an interesting point raised by Mike, the generalist handle 'Health And Safety' does NOT serve us well. In a marketing and branding world we are best to use our full title.... 'Occupational Safety and Health'.

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Aidan If you go to the BBC website, you can listen to the whole show but Ray's interview is about 67 minutes in. Paul
