Posted By DAVID FOTHERINGHAM What would you consider to be a fair ratio of supervisors to employees in the heavy fabrication industry? Is there any guidance or consultation documents which you could refer me to.

Posted By Andy Brazier I don't think it is possible to define a simple ratio or rule of thumb. It really depends on competencies of the team members and the supervisor, and the culture of the organisation. You may Research Report 292 from HSE useful. http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr292.htm You can use it to identify what the supervision role entails and hence determine whether you have enough people with supervisory responsibilities in place to implement the requirements.

Posted By William Where i work there are too many Chiefs and not enough Indians, and what happens is that nothing gets done as they all squabble amongst themselves. You should concentrate not so much on the ratio but on the quality of supervision, but obviously if you have 1 supervisor and 100 men then its not really going to work, but if you have too many then it wont work either. I don't think there is any magic number, every workplace and industry will need different levels depending on the maturity of the workforce and supervisors.
