I am trying to balance a PPE requirement to help prevent a real problem with slips in our kitchens against what is more of a perceived risk of crush injury to the foot.
There is a potential pitfall of presumption that as catering "safety" shoes come with protective toe caps, that this is a risk that must be guarded against.
Meantime, I'm keen to introduce an excellent treaded overshoe, which obviously has no toe protection.
My suggested rationale is that the incidence of such crushing injury is probably no greater in a kitchen that it would be in an office, school, social care setting etc. - yet we don't insist that those employees wear protective footwear.
I'm interested in the views of others, and I'm particularly keen to hear from anyone who has any comparative stats to back up my argument!
The HSE stats don't seem to drill down deeply enough for my purposes.

Bob,
Try www.sfceurope.com for overshoes. In lab tests carried out by Health and Safety Laboratory their shoes came top of the class for grip.
Disclaimer: Needless to say I have no connection with this company.

If there is no risk of something heavy dropping on the feet and crushing the toes, then there is no need to use toe protectors. I've not seen many food handlers wearing such protection and i used to inspect food businesses. An exception would be a food warehouse of course. In H&S it is important to remember that "actions should be proportional to risk"

when i was a chef in the TA, we had to wear safety boots all the time in the kitchens, yet in the field we wore normal army boots. However there are some very heavy sharp knifes, that if dropped could spear a toe.
