Primary School Risk Assessment - Advice please

When doing a Primary School Risk Assessment with the head teacher we tend to look at slip trips falls snags and generally look for hazards that could harm young children, staff, visitors etc.
My request is this
1. What supplementary assessments should I check are being done, reviewed, updated, e.g. fire, asbestos, travel.
2. Does anyone have a methodolgy, exemplar of risk assessments they are prepared to share.
I thank you in anticipation of your help.

Hi Phillip
I would certainly expect asbestos and fire to have been carried out - have you checked with the LA Asset Management/Property Services people, they have have done this already.
Others I would look at are:
School trips and outings
Open days/parents events
Caretakers duties
Cleaners and COSHH
In school activities (art/science etc.)
Might be useful to look at the accident records.
Also, who cleans windows, unblocks drains, changes light bulbs, looks after car park/garden etc.
The list could go on, but this should get you started!!
Good luck
Linda

I would certainly include security of gates and control of visitors particularly in relation to a primary school - or is that dealt with outside the H&S function?

Phillip, there is much formal guidance on this subject matter from the Education Authorities. It is a much much wider subject than you suggest. So unless you are doing very simple workplace hazard checks, I recommend that you do some research around these sites before drawing up anything of your own.
All these websites are public access sites; I use them frequently for reference when dealing with education standards.
It has all been done before and this is where you will find most of it. So no need to re-invent the wheel and indeed probably not the best course of action when dealing with child safety anyway.
http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/
http://www.dfes.gov.uk/
http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/
And for just one example of a typical practical output of the guidance-try this local authority site. (first one that appeared on that search engine!)

Good luck

I believe bullying by children on other children is a health and safety issue and should be risk assessed. Further - what about the safety/security of children on school premises before school opens for the day?
