Posted By Lukasz What institution or organization my company could join to increase health & safety culture/standards? Maybe you anything like that which is more specified to landfill sites? Thanks

Posted By Amanda Lukasz Have you checked out the British Safety Council? They are recognised for the 5 Star Award and Sword of Honour. This obtained by being audited against the standards published by them Rospa also do safety awards so you can check these out. You could also go for ISO18001 which looks in depth at your systems (which relates to culture) Or if money is tight you could implement the HSG 65 Successful Health and Safety Management. Try checking out the HSE website Leadership case studies available they explain how they have changed their safety culture. Good Luck

Posted By Jay Joshi It may be best if you can identify what support and commitment you have from Senior Management to proceed or even at the most basic level what financial outlay is available (budget). Basic membership of ROSPA/British Safety Councilonly provides access to limited sources of information and a telephone/online/e-mail advice/information service. The audits and awards all cost extra. Obviously, the audits will identify there areas where improvement is required. This will help to improve performance, but addressing safety culture is a long term proposition.

Posted By Peter Farrell I would consider starting at HSG 65 prior to engaging in the BSC 5 star award. The cost for the 5 star is £3,500+ and also takes a lot of resources. If your starting from scratch it may be worth making this your future target. As suggested I would start by getting the director, and senior mangers actively involved and leading the way.

Posted By Safety Dave I agree with everything above re the importance of getting the leadership side of things right...but one thing that always gets missed out in these discussions is the group of people who have the most influence over whether you have a good or bad safety culture - the employees themselves. Think bottom up, not top down and involve your staff in the process from day one.

Posted By ClaireL Sugning up with an external organisation and audits does not necessarily mean an improve in safety culture. It demonstrates that management are (theoretically) commiteed to H&S and that it forces employees to get it right when the company is being audited. Sorry to be cynical but I've seen so many comanies with this award and that award but the employees (and often management) aren't really committed and don't really understand what it's all about. An improve in safety culture is about getting everyone in the company to believe in H&S and pro-actively work towards a safer and healthier environment. It takes time to really change health and safety cultures and signing up to external company auditing is, in my opinion, lip service.
