Hi,
We have a labourer who has returned to work after having a gall bladder removed.
He has be signed back to work from the doctor, and has undergone a RTW interview from the HR department.
I am concerned that he may not be fit to do labouring work, despite the assurnaces that he is as he still has a tube inserted.
Any advice??????

In you position I would want to obtain advice from an occupational physician as they will have the necessary knowledge about work environment, etc. which the GP may not have.

Has his doctor signed him back for full duties? If you can, I would review their risk assessment, or carry out your own. It's a fairly major operation and I would highly recommend getting his GP/Surgeon to sign him back with their opinion on what duties he could perform (if they don't charge an extortionate amount for a report!)
I would let someone know what your views are and offer some 'assistance' with the risk assessment. More than one set of eyes is usually the best way.
Good luck!!!

Hi,
In my working environment, we are very careful about RTW after surgery & often arrange a phased return with limited hours and/or limited duties as directed by an OH expert, building up to normality within 1-3 months, depending upon the nature of the op. An OH consultation would be considerably cheaper & less trouble than a claim and possibly a lost employee!

Perhaps I have missed something - but what is the problem? Not sure what the 'tube' relevance is - perhaps incidental.
The employee has been signed back to work by a Doctor (presumably the doctor has asked what is his normal duties are) and he has passed an interview with HR. If the employee is willing to return to normal work, then what is the issue?
