Good afternoon learned friends
could anyone point me in the direction of some definitive evidence regarding the width of an office workers desk.
an in house remodelling of reception has ended with standard kitchen worktops being used as desk tops, my argument is that they are not wide enough to comfortably fit a monitor, keyboard and associated paperwork and still leave enough room for the employee to sit and work comfortably. i can backup my concerns with a ergonomic assessment but i want to know facts and figures first.

It has to met minimum requiremnts for DSE use as laid down in BS EN ISO 9241-5:1999 I havnt got a copy to look it up the measurements -the DSE regs say something like it has to meet the indviduals requirements and the task and has to be configured acordingly and will refer to the standard bsen .. i think its about 600mm depth minimum plus the screen ..isnt a worktop 600mm anyway but hen theres the screen., but i wouldnt thimk it siutable for other reasons, down to doing a risk assessment again for postural and ergonomic requirements.. justlooking up the bsen I came across http://www.2iq.co.uk/ergonomics.html which also gives some good pointers

The schedule to the DSE Regs merely says that a work surface has to be big enough but it is good practice to at least have the size quoted in the BS.

Interseting one this.
The revised VDU booklet issued by HSE rev3 still uses the CRT instead of a flat screen. Yet most of the workstations I see nowadays are flat screen, and if they are not they are working towards them.
And by definition a flat screen means you can get away with a narrower desk, ergo 600mm would be sufficient for most office type work.
