Posted By ChrisM Just a quick one in relation to a request from employees really. I have my thoughts but I want to gauge opinion as I feel mine may be based on personal feelings as oppose to hard safety law/fact.
We have a line running which is usually manned by 4-7 people...perfect world the higher, at a pus the lower...at a push.
Management now wants to cover breaks to boost production by manning the line with 2 people. Employees feel this is unsafe and one or two have asked me where they would stand if they refused to do this. Union etc has been mentioned but I would like to know where any safety regs etc come into play on this?
Your replies will be valued
Thanks

Posted By Anthony Edwards Chris,
As you have not mentioned what is on the line difficult to comment but what happens if when there are only two and one has to nip off to the loo. Sounds like the job requires assessing and from that assessment you should identify the relevant risks/hazards and controls in place, the controls in place may include the minimum number of employees required to run the line.
hope that helps

Posted By ChrisM The line is dispensing a powder product into cans. If you can imagine that line or have experience with similar you can imagine the different parts of the line which need to be monitored.

Posted By David Bannister Hi Chris, if your concerns are that you or others will be exposed to danger you must make this very clear to the management, using the services of your TU if necessary or applicable.
If this is more of a quality/production concern then I suspect that the lowering of quality and production numbers together with a rise in waste will result in a management rethink.
