One of our sub-contractors has asked the question of how often a torque spanner should be calibrated for use in structural steelwork.

Any ideas?

All advice appreciated

According to the 5th Edition of the National Structural Steelwork Specification document the torque spanner should have a calibration check at least once per shift and re calibrated if necessary in accordance with BS 4604.

The callibrator itself will need testing at a recognised test house/manufacturer and they will specify the re-callibration periods, normally it is 12 monthly but it does depend on duty. ISO 9001 companies will have procedures within their systems for such tasks.

Another small point when using torque spanners is to develop a system for marking nuts that have been torqued so that you can identify any missed during the work - It happens relatively frequently though very rarely with catastrophic consequences.

Would the aforementioned Calibration regimes and associated regulations apply to the Scaffolding Torque Aided Regulating Spanner...sorry I realise that my post dose not address the original question, however, it is generic.

Any tool such as this needs callibration thus my answer is affirmative. I would guess most are not so callibrated though!
