Posted By Paul Stacey Your thoughts please - We have a number of staff who use Hand Held Bar Code Scanners for a full shift, however the reading of the screen is intermitent. Should we fund eyesight tests ? The DSE Regs leave us a question in the exceptions "portable systems not in prolonged use" we could consider that we are in prolonged use.

Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi Paul More likely to have problems with RSI if the units are like ours. If your op's have problems reading the screens because they are small, offer them the option of eye tests. IMO Regards Alan

Posted By holmezy Paul, I don't think that the dse regs were written with this equipment in mind so from that resct, I dont think you have a legal responsibility to offer eye tests. However from a "looking after employees" and a moral point of view its not a great expense so why not. You might make them feel loved! Don't think you are under any obligation to fund the specs though. Incidentally, it doesnt matter if they have good, bad or indifferent eyesight the display will still be small so if they are required to read it, they will have to bring it closer to the eye, which would then encourage varied focal distances which may relieve eye strain. Not DSE regs. Holmezy cider tonite....

Posted By Paul Stacey Is the viewing distance between the Unit and the Operator fixed in some way? No Rob, the operator can position the scanner at a chosen distance to suit their own focus

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Paul Could this equipment fall under Reg1(4) - nothing in the Regs shall apply to calculators, cash registers or any equipment having a small data or measurement display for direct use of the equipment? Paul
