Posted By Gra Clarke Hi Guys, We are installing a new racking system, movement up the aisles will be Fork Lift Trucks, (Reach), we will also have a designated, painted walkway for pedestrians up the same aisles. What would the distance between racks need to be? I have in my head, from somewhere, it should be 1m for pedestrians plus length of truck; am I right?

Posted By Stefan Daunt Would it not be the width of the truck? if it wss the length + 1m, you would be open to pedestrians walking behind the truck whilst it is placing pallets in the racking. Also depending on the size of the warehouse if the aisle was narrower you could gain an extra aisle for extra srorage.

Posted By Saz G I would be slightly concerned that your risk assessment would allow for the interaction of pedestrian in racked aisles where Reach trucks where operating?

Posted By John A Wright A "designated pathway" sounds like a complete segregation of FLT and pedestrians? If that's what you aim for you'd need to space your aisles to allow 1 metre plus either side pathways for the FLTs to turn and raise loads. I'd say a total of 10 metres between aisles :0) Seriously, you don't need designated footpaths between aisles, just safe practices.

Posted By Saz G Tell that to the picker that was squashed between a Reach truck and an occupied pallet space at ground floor level in one of the cold storage facilities I used to work at. Oh no, sorry, you can't - he's dead!

Posted By Saz G Oh and Reach trucks don't need to turn in aisles, only in and out of them, they usually service both sides of an aisle. Also, try telling the MD that you want aisle widths of 10m and reduce his rack occupancy by 30%.....

Posted By Simon Dean Unless you have a Reach Truck with a 180 pivot forks, it will need to turn in the aisle to service both sides. We don't have pedestrian and MHE segregation in our picking aisles, we can't do it. There is no way we can create a safe walk way (as that would need barriers etc) what we have created is designated walk ways. Best route to take is to do a PVI Assessment(Pedestrian Vehicle Interface) and look at what operations need to be done and what pedestrian vs truck access is required. Go down the route of Lighting levels, Marked out path ways, one way systems, use of horns, awareness training (never walk behind a truck in operation etc), high-vis etc. We have had the HSE on site for other reasons, they have walked through our racking locations (and there is a lot of it) and been fine with what we have in place. Hope this helps. Si P.S. The space between our racking is 2.5 m

Posted By Bill01 The only safe way of doing this is to exclude pedestrians when teh FLT's are working with the forks raised. Its all too easy fro loads to fall from teh FLT and racking. Also if your racking is back to back have you considered the issue of push through on adjoining aisles?
