Those who've signed up for the HSE e-mail bulletins will note that the May 2008 myth relates to park benches being 3" too low.
(If you haven't got the bulletin link you might not find the May Myth yet)

This would appear to be a response to an article which appeared in the Daily Mail in June 2007!

A swift rebuttal or what?

It's not so much a sign of slow response as a sign they couldn't think of anything more important to say. As we all know, nothing is happening in H&S this month. If there was something like, maybe, a new law... but when does that ever happen....

sheesh.

I wonder if tabloids present 'ridiculous' stories so readers' egos can be massaged with sense of superiority over such 'ridiculous' decisions that are being made by stupid other people all the time.

If so, Daily Mail readers and the like are hardly going to be interested in the truth - as it would burst their smugness-bubble.

I agree though - HSE needs to act quick and profusely to fight the constant attacks on our heroic profession.

I Think you will find that they have been struggling with printing decent Myths of the Month for a while now!! I dont think it will be too long before they scrap it altogether.

Isn't there an inevitable delay between story and myth?

A myth is a story which has grown in the public conscience (is that the right word?) to the point where a single story is now taken as multiple events and evidence of common practice ...

Running out of good examples is a good sign - it means the incidence of stupid reporting must be tailoring off (or the public are less gullible).

Perhaps we could give them some suggestions for Myths. One I would like to see is about first aiders not being allowed to use plasters and I'm sure most of us have examples.

Good one ... and that first aiders need insurance before helping people in the street.

And that you're not allowed to keep aspirin in your desk drawer...

And fire extinguishers must not be used...

And anyone caught wearing a hard hat more than three years old could be jailed.

And that zero accidents is achievable...

(oops sorry, don't know how that one slipped in....)

Ron,

Anyone who reads the aforementioned publication will of course know that the REAL reason the HSE has taken so long to respond is because inspectors have been sifting for the specific regulation in question amidst all the H&S "red tape" and only now, can they state with confidence that it does not exist.

;-)

Or maybe until now they have been following the maxim: "Never argue with fools because they bring you down to their level... and then beat you with experience!"

Who can tell?

Eh?

Park benches?

My HSE desk calendar says that the May Myth is to do with stepladders. There's the little man whistling as he changes his light bulb with three-point contact......

A quick flick over the page and I see that the June Myth is park benches.

Oh dear.

HSE Desk Calendars (!?) don't align with the website.

Ah well, never mind, a minor matter considering their on-line F1O (CDM) doesn't align with the Regulations.
Ssshhh Bob!
