I am looking for information on the requirement for inspection of escalators. These do not come under LOLER but are mentioned very briefly in PUWER.
I have found reference to HSE GN PM 45 – Escalators: Periodic thorough examination, but this is out of print. Is there a requirement for statutory inspection or does it just come under routine maintenance? Perhaps somebody with an old copy of PM45 could advise.

Malcom,
A quick word with our escalator engineers and they do a monthly maintenance visit which he believes is directed by LOLER.
They also do 6 monthly insurance insepctions, although this is just best practice and not a requirement.
Hope that helps a little.

It may help but it is not very clear. I would say that whilst statutory inspections do not appear to be required there needs to be a maintenance regime in place that will demonstrate that the escalator is being maintained and that this will include regular inspections for safety issues. I would also ask my insurers as they would know if a statutory inspection was required.
