Posted By Anthony Edwards Hi,
I have been asked to provide evidence in legislation where it specifies that fire alarms must be tested on a weekly basis. I have looked at the RRO but didn't see specifics (may have missed it).
Any suggestions

Posted By Martin Taylor Pretty sure that you won't find a legal requirement. Should be risk assessment basis.
At my current employer we do a weekly but at previous sites it was monthly.
I support weekly here cos the alarm system is not the most reliable plus we get quite a change of workforce so it helps that they hear the alarm regularly.
Previously with a reliable alarm system and stable workforce monthly seemed fine.

Whilst this may not be law try to look at BS 5839-1:2002 as this details fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings and is the code of practice for system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance. In here you will see details of weekly testing by the user.

Posted By David Whaley Anthony,
I haven't time to check the regs, so take into account what others have said. But be aware of your insurers requirements. They may specify that you comply with certain criteria.
Hope this helps.

Posted By water67. Check with your local Fire and Rescue service fire safety officer they will indicate their preference. amazing how it impresses managers when it's a guy or woman in uniform that says something must be done..we check weekly all our sites..a few dozen in total
cheers.

Posted By peter gannaway How about common areas of flats, arranging to test alarms at a set regular weekly or monthly basis is causing a lot of problems. What is reasonable?

Posted By Crim The guide to the RRFSO page 55, section 2.5 testing and maintenance states
"all types of fire warning systems should be tested once a week".
It goes on to mention activating different call points for each successive test etc.
