Posted By Hayley McBride After much justifying and persuasion, I have finally convinced the company I work for to have a H&S committee representative of the whole organisation. I was planning to invite members of the organisation ranging from the CEO, the board, senior managers right down to the staff on the floor to join and use this committee as a forum to provide health and safety information and allow for two way communication to openly happen. Now I have been told (by one particular Senior manager) that there is a legal process that has to be followed to vote people onto a committee. I see this particular managers comments as another obstacle in a long line of obstacles I have had to overcome to raise the awareness of Health and Safety within this company. Can anyone advise me as to the correct (and legal) way of setting up a health and safety committee? Many thanks to all.

Posted By Anthony Edwards Hayley, An extract from the Safety representatives and safety Committees Regulations When appointing safety representatives the trade union will inform the employer of the group or groups of employees represented. They may for example say that all the employees in a particular category are represented or, alternatively, only their own members. If some employees are not members of a trade union recognised by the employer, but are part of a group of employees for which a union is recognised, they may be covered by the consultation arrangements with the union safety representative. If they are not members of such a group, or if the union safety representative(s) cover only their own members, then the employer needs to make arrangements to consult these employees - either directly or through representatives elected by them for this purpose under the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996. Posted By garyh I endorse the above however have always encouraged anyone to attend who can contribute, trying to maintain a 50/50 ratio of "workers" and "managers".

Posted By patrick carr Hi Hayley It's not just me then, iv'e been trying for 5 years to get a H&S committee started at work. However i am the only H&S rep within my organisation, and you need 2 or more to request the setting up of a committee. Things started to happen recently when a HSE inspector enquired, what the company were doing regarding worker involvement in H&S.To cut a long story short we are now setting up a committee.I will still be the only TU safety rep, but it's a start. I viewed this site last night, and there were some very unfair and unjust posts,i came on tonight to air a few of my concerns regarding these posts,however they are no longer here, the moderators must of beat me to it. Posted By Lilian McCartney Hi Hayley, To help things along a bit at my work i thought about how big the safety committee would be practical to run - taking into account depts etc. The suggested numbers (50:50 managers/employee reps) and then asked for volunteers from each suggested area. Where we had more than two volunteers the intention was to have a vote but they worked it out between the two of them. The we tried it to see if it would work with the format. Although we have recognised Trade Union here they had previously tried ot get members to Safety reps to no avail (not enough members and type of work we do I guess) - hence the employee rep route as per Consult. Regs 1996. Lilian
