Hello All,
A while back i asked for some advice on working from height which many of you kindly offered.

We have now got a company in to inspect and certify our systems and PPE (harnesses) but they won't train our staff to use the PPE. They say they can do a brief how to put it on and what to visually inspect each time but can not give any formal training with certification. Believe it or not i cannot find anywhere that will train the staff and give us certificates to state they have been trained. Is this the norm or am i just having a bad week?

Any help will be greatly apprecited.

Tracey,

I don't think your having a bad day!

The most usual provider of training for equipment of this type is the supplier or manufacturer. They should also be able to provide training on undertaking monthly inspections of the equipment which you should be progressing.

I can't help feeling you've already tried the above approach though!

Hi Ken
Absolutely right! The installers do service and inspect will demonstrate but no formal certificate will be issued.

Being instructed on how to wear the harness and what lanyard is appropriate (arrest, restraint, inspection etc) should be quite simple for the supplying company to provide. What you do with it once up there is another matter and I am not overly surprised they won't offer the training you require, if you think about it, it makes sense.

As practitioners we are often required to devise systems and procedures that enable people to work safely; is this something that you may be looking at far to far outside of the box? Just a thought.

Is the WAH varied that requires the use of this protective equipment, or would it be for a specific use that would be reoccurring? If so I may have a solution subject to your response.

Take care

Have you contacted your county fire service, the fire & rescue service is becoming more involved in commercial training and they have from my experiences have some excellent training facilities.

Sorry this is a late response, but i have recently been on a cousre provided by SpanSet (UK) Ltd. The course was very informative and well run. They are located in MIDDLEWICH,
Cheshire. We were trained in the selection, inspection and use of safety harnesses. Hope this helps
