Posted By wify Hi all. Under PUWER What level of documented inspection should be taken on step ladders. Do you need a specific check sheet,(rungs, cross supports, feet etc) or is it sufficient that a competent person inspects and records just the unique step ladder number? Also is weekly documented inspection suffecent, and before use visual(non documented)inspection ? Thanks for any comments.

Posted By Pam Phillips The most relevant regulations are WAH but never the less a full inspection by a competent person periodically and a visual inspection by the user every time. WRT the timescale they state 'as often as is necessary to ensure safety, and in particular to make sure that any deterioration can be detected and remedied in good time'. I would say every month is adequate. A quick google on ladder inspection checklist will give you an idea of what to check for.

Posted By Chris Pope HSE recommended somewhere (I am sorry I can't recall where) it may be their toolbox info : annually formal inspection for infrequent use, 6 monthly for frequent use supplemented by user inspection

Posted By Tabs A document listing rungs, etc., can be useful as a reminder of what the inspector should be looking for but it is not specified anywhere in law. The inspection frequency should be to suit the usage and environment - heavy use in a punishing environment will need much more frequent inspection that the set kept under the stairs in an office block, used twice a year for Christmas decorations. Visual inpection before every use? You bet.
