Posted By Robert S Woods I'm having a problem convincing a site manager on rules surrounding work in excavations/trenches. My reply to the following statements would be "correct" would yours? All excavations deeper than 1.2m should be supported? It may be necessary to support trenches less than 1.2m deep if ground conditions are poor or operatives are carrying out work that puts them at increased risk, e.g. kneeling in trench? No one should enter an unsupported trench with the exception of those less than 1.2m in stiff clay rock or similar? Looking forward to your feedback. Rob

Posted By Ron Hunter Not applicable to suitable sloped excavations. As I recall, the Engineers Handbook gives slope angles for various materials.

Posted By Pete Longworth Try the following website https://www.axaipartners...Your_Practical_Guide.pdf It gives guidance on different types of wall support as well as angles of battering for different soil types

Posted By David Matthew The 1.2 rule went out a number of years ago. The need for trench support is all down to risk assessment taking into a variety of factors including but not limited to nature of the ground, weather conditions, loading of the ground, proximity of passing traffic which might include underground trains etc etc. As the previous response stated it is permissible to step or batter back excavation sides. Unfortunately there are still a number of site inspection forms out there which state trench support at 1.2m and over. Regards, David

Posted By Robert S Woods The HSE guidance (something like) "be safe be shore, safety in excavations" still has the 1.2m rule in it. Can anyone point me in the direction of a publication that says otherwise? The AXA publication mentioned in a previous link is an abridged version. Rob

Posted By David Matthew I believe that the 1.2m rule came from the old Construction (General Provisions) Regs 1961 which were replaced by the Construction (health, safety and welfare) Regs 1996 which have since been replaced by CDM 2007. HS(G) 185 Safety in Excavations may well still refer to 1.2m dependant on when it was last revised. At the end of the day there are occasions when shallow excavations will need trench support and deep excavations in stable rock won't which is why I was led to believe the prescriptive rule was removed. Regards, David
