I am looking for clarification of the following question in relation to the use of cranes and their certification.
I cannot locate the answer currently, or if there is a defined answer, so would appreciate your input and direction to the answer.
The following Thorough Examinations are required:
- 12 monthly for lifting operations (not including persons);
- 6 monthly when used for lifting persons;
- 4 yearly load testing certification / CE when new;
In my previous dealings with the main UK crane suppliers, they supply a certificate for each of the above requirements, but I cannot locate anything to say they must have a specific individual certificate for each aspect.
My question is this, do you have to have an individual test certificate for each aspect, or can the twelve monthly thorough examination be used if it is within 6 months of the test date?
The company which completed the most recent thorough examination for the crane we are planning to use stated that the 6 monthly and 12 monthly Thorough Examinations are identical, therefore the certificate held is valid for lifting persons as it was completed within the past 6 months.
Are my previous experiences with companies their best practice or is it a legal requirement?
I hope that makes sense and you can see what I am asking?

If its within 6 months I don't see why not.

If lifting persons the certification must have been done within the last six months. You do not specify either specifically.
The four yearly is a moot point as every test and thorough examination could include load tests if the competent person so decides.

HI bob,
I agree, if the test has been completed within the last 6 months then that's OK.

The Flux !
Each item of lifting equipment must have a Certificate of Thorough examination every 12 months i.e overhead gantry cranes, mobile cranes etc. Each item of lifting accessories needs to have a 6 monthly examination i.e slings,chains and steel wire rope,eye bolts and shackles. If you have lifting equipment that carries personnel i.e man cages, Mobile platforms etc then again it is every 6 months. I think you need to be a little bit more specific as to what you are having tested.

Dear Mr Flux
To try to help.
A new Crane has a 4 yearly test and load test.
6 Months later it needs a 6 monthly if used for Lifting Persons.
At 12 months it needs a further 12 monthly.
Then only every 6 months if used for lifting persons.
When the 4 Year period is up the crane must have a new 4 Yearly including Load Test.
As Bob Lewis says if the Crane Inspector thought there was a reason for a load test then he can instigate this.
We did this frequently if a crane had been shock loaded.
Many major Crane companies within the UK the use the above systems. Some of the companies had Internal Inspectors fully qualified to carry out 6 Monthly Crane Inspections and 6 Monthly Lifting Tackle Inspections.
Most would go to the Insurance Inspectors to have the 12 Monthly thorough Inspection carried out.
This was purely for the reason that this Inspection is carried out by an Independent Inspector to the company.
Most crane companies carry out 6 monthly tests because of short notice customer requests to carry out man riding duties.
But remember there is no requirement for this 6 monthly if the crane is never used for man riding duties.
So after 2 hours at some stages 1 certificate could cover everything.(Hooray)
Hope this helps Alex

No problems Mr Flux always try to help.
Lifting Operations and the use of cranes have very complex regulations an Best Practice guides.
Always remember one thing We are defying Gravity when we carry out Lifting Operations?
