Hello everybody,

CDM 2007 seems like a popular subject on the forum at the moment?

Just a quick question, has anybody got any examples or can direct me to any guidance documents that contain examples of the layout of a designers - Risk Register?

For your back ground information I work in an architects practice and I have been tasked to prepare the offices CDM policy and develop a Risk Register in accordance with the latest CDM 2007 Regulations..

I have read the ACOP and the official industry guidance for designers, taken from the citb website but they don’t give any examples of the format for a Risk Register..

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated..

Hi Andrew,

I believe the Association of Project Safety have published a document called 'Guide to the Management of CDM Co-ordination' which contains such an example. I believe it is quite expensive however.

I suspect you may be confusing a couple of issues here. Your practice's CDM policy/procedure is a document that sets out (in general terms) how your practice will comply with CDM - in general terms.

A risk register is (normally) a project - specific tool used to record and track the design and specification issues which arise in the course of the specific project. It is intended to assist with recording the important considerations and decisions taken, and would normally be the first point of reference for the Pre-Construction Information which needs to be passed to the Contractor.

It may be possible to design a 'generic' template format or layout for risk registers to be completed by your practice (especially if you are primarily involved in relatively 'simple' design commissions with elements that repeat across different projects), but all of the (one-off and 'complex') projects I have been involved with have developed bespoke formats or pro-forma for the project risk registers... The danger of blindly adopting a templated approach is that it may act to prevent the design team from identifying and considering specific risk issues on a particular project.

I would be happy to discuss off-line if you think I could help - but you should be aware I don't subscribe to the view that provision of a single example would help anyone understand the basic requirements of the two types of document you refer to.

Have a look at the paper at the following link;

http://www.web-safety.co...apers/DSAC_Explained.pdf

On page 4 there is a template that you could adopt, as Steve suggests.

Design risk assessment (or safety analysis) is an integral aspect of the design process and applying it will allow the designers to determine whether they have considered all of the H&S issues associated with their project; i.e. during construction, use, maintenance and demolition.

Best wishes

Thanks everyone who has replied, your comments and weblinks were very helpful..

I have prepared a draft CDM 2007 practice policy document which sets out in general terms how the practice will comply with CDM 2007 regulations. It is now with the Directors for review and approval..

What I am trying to do now is prepare a risk/ hazard register template, document for the architects to record any important design considerations and decisions taken.

I understand that this risk/ hazard register should also act as the first point of reference for the Pre-Construction Information which will be passed onto the Contractor.

All I am trying to do is replace our generic designer risk assessment EXCEL document with a suitable risk/ hazard register template in accordance with the new ACOP.

I totally agree there is danger in blindly adopting a generic template approach to catch all risk/ hazard involved in the design of a scheme..

And I never liked it when architects would issue generic designer risk assessments with only a few minor changes, no matter what the sceheme involved!!

And finally any additional feeback or comments regarding this thread would be greatly appreciated..

Many thanks,
Andrew

Some Organisations post their documents on the www for access by external consultants.
As an example (there are a few) see:

http://www.fifedirect.or...BB-AD0A-8777F7D6BAEF14CF

There is a Designer's Ckecklist in there somewhere!
