I am looking after some sheltered housing where there are stair lifts at some of the properties. Obviously something on the stair is going to present a problem if there is a fire, so, does anyone know of any recomendations / guidance for minimum width (free space) of the staires with a stair lift on them.

Tyne & Wear Fire Service have helpfully posted many of their procedural advice notes aimed at their Fire Safety Inspecting Officers onto the web.

Have a look here for the page relating to stairlifts

http://www.twfire.org/fi...are-standards/stairlifts

and good luck, as I have had similar problems with a 4 storey single staircase eye clinic who wanted a simliar device for occasional use.
