Posted By DaveCole I wonder if any of you knowledgable folk on here can help me. We have engineers on site carrying out maintanace on our overhead crane. They are using a MEWP to carry tools up to the top of the crane and then unhooking themselves and climbing out of the MEWP onto the crane. Surely it is correct method for one guy to use the access ladder on the crane and the other guy to put the tools up in the MEWP? The guy in the MEWP can then return the machine to the ground and use the access ladder himself. They tell us this is to much up and down the ladder? Any comments guys or am I being over cautious??? Thanks Dave C

Posted By A Campbell Dave, I would take a serious look at the system of work. The fact that someone is climbing out of the MEWP (any type) at height means there is a risk of falling. There are ways and means of mitigating the risk of hitting the ground and/or structures, but at the end of the day if someone did fall and possibly attached to a fall arrest system – then what? Injury? Suspension trauma Who/how would a person be rescued? The list can be endless! If in such as situation I would question their method of work, agree to have independent MEWP operator and let them climb the correct, safe system to get to their crane in one trip! Calculate the extra cost of 1 MEWP operator to an incident of fall from height? Tony

Posted By garyh The norm is, NEVER exit a MEWP at height, in my experience. If I came upon this situation, I would use the nuclear option - STOP THE JOB!

Posted By bill strachan1 Dave, How high is the access platform off the ground? Are they clipped on while climbing the access ladder? If not then by ensuring the MEWP is landed on the platform and they have twin lanyards to aid safe access from the MEWP I see no reason to revert to making the guys climb the unprotected access ladder If on the other hand there is a man-safe system with the ladder, go for the ladder.
