Posted By warderic I would like yor opinion please. I recently sent an employee on a NEBOSH certificate course. This employee works as my H&S co-ordinator and has done so for a couple of years doing an extremly good job. He attended the course over several weeks, worked hard, studying during the evening and prepared himself well for the exams. When his results came back he past the theory with flying colours, but unfortunately he failed the practial. Its been many years since I completed my NEBOSH certificate but I have never heard of anyone failing a practical. If my memory serves me correctly the practical exam was a reasonably straightforward identification of very obvious hazards etc, which all where expected to pass without any problems. Have things changed? do you know of anyone failing their pratical? Please excuse any spelling errors; spell checks not working Many thanks

Posted By Carolc He would also have had to write a convincing report for "management", based on his observations - perhaps his report-writing was not as good as his observational skills?

Posted By Tony abc jprhdnMurphy I remember doing mine. The tutor told everyone to concentrate on the theory because the Practical was easy and nobody ever fails. I only just scraped through the practical.

Posted By Pete Longworth The practical is not a straight forward, every body passes, exercise. It is just as much a part of the examination process as the 2 written papers. Otherwise what would be the point. There could be a number of reasons for someone failing. They may not have identified the full range of hazards present for instance. The written report may not be detailed enough. He / she may not have included any recommmendations for improvement, or they may not be appropriate or realistic. There may not be a timetable for implementing the recommendations or there may not be a cost benefit analysis. All of these things are items that should be included in the written report.
Who knows why your colleague has failed, maybe he / she thought for some reason that passing the practical was a formality. Can't think why.

Posted By John D Crosby Ask the training provider as to why as the Practical paper is marked in-house unlike the other two papers. I have failed candidatesbecause of the report part of the exam where they have not given advice/solutions to the risks found but have gone on about having management systems in place as per HSG65. This is not what is wanted by the examiner. John C

Posted By philip john They main problem with this pracitcal exam is time scale.
Didn't the course provider let him do a mock exam to prepare and was he given an old completed report to give him an idea of whats expected? If not try and get one of these as its like looking at past papers (this will really help) and should ensure next time he has no trouble.
Ask on this forum to see if any one has an old practical completed paper.

Posted By Ian J B I got really high grades in both exams but only a pass in the practical.. I put it down to the length of time spent on explaining the how's of the report writing, easy to make excuses I guess, but we had a guy fail the practical too

Posted By John A Wright Last year our class had a lot who failed the Mngt paper and we queried the results. The response included a breakdown and there were candidates who failed the practical.
Some candidates also got very high marks >75% in the practical, and they would say they benefited from the 'mock' that was done. Most of those candidates were also experienced report writers and had taken in all the advice about how to present answers.
One good bit of advice I recall was to make sure you found hazards in all the hazard 'types', like mechanical, electrical, chemical, manual handling, housekeeping. Maybe our exam location made it easy: it was a training centre for car repair, a large garage full of 16-year olds, difficult to keep the lads in control :o)

Posted By warderic I’m particularly annoyed because the course tutor told him the practical was a formality.

Posted By Phil Reilly Hi, have recently sat my nebosh gen cert and await results! can say that its not just a case of all pass. The time limit was tight for the observations and for the report writing. Regards Phil.

Posted By Ron Hunter A long time ago now, but I do recall being under much more time pressure with pulling a decent report together from the observations I had gathered. A good course & titor would have taken candidates through at least one mock practical and an assessment of a Management Report. I'm sure with the theory part I had time (but not much!) to spare.

Posted By Mitch Eric,
Is it a problem? They passed the theory and failed the practical though he is obviously 'doing an extremly good job' on a practical level for your requirements. I would find out the why he failed from the examiner and see if it worth pursuing otherwise let them get on with their job without any undue pressure.

Posted By Peter Taylor14 I am a NEBOSH practical examiner and recently several exam results have been changed by the external verifier. the reason given is consistancy in that in some cases I have been unduly harsh or lenient. Passing the practical is NOT an afore gone conclusion

Posted By graeme12345 Peter do not understand when you state "were changed due to,consistency"
Cannot see someone wanting a change of results if they passed, so why "harsh"
If they were failed and you were "lenient" in their marking how does that work?

Posted By Pete Longworth I presume Peter meant that the results were changed following an audit rather than as a result of a candidate appealing his mark.

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Mmmm, sounds to me like you may not have given the guy much help or is he a theoretical type? Have you considered that you could have led him a bit better by talking to him about the process he would have gone through, you had already done it and could have helped a lot.
