Hi everyone.

I am interested in hearing the views of others on a few queries.

A new abrasive wheel purchased, has date of manufacture as 09/2008, and expiry date 09/2011. This is 3 years, Am I incorrect when I understood that abrasive wheels are to be used within 2 years of date of manufacture?

A second question is regarding the replacing of the cut off wheel. The manufacturers of the appliance , state the wheel fastener tightening torque is 20-25 NM. Should a torque wrench be provided to enable the competent operator to accurately gauge this force?

One last query, Are diamond cut off wheels classed as abrasive wheels, and come under the selection and mounting of abrasive wheels? For a while I thought they did not come under this training, but am lately concerned as diamonds are an abrasive.

I look forward to your views.

Regards

Seamus

1. Shelf life of 3years per regs
2. Yes you need a torque wrench if this is stated as a setting requirement
3. Question what is the diamond cutting wheel constructed from?

Alan,
What regs are you referring to when you state 3 years?
I thought the abrasive wheels regs were no more?

A bit techy for a Monday but vitrified bonded wheels and points have an unlimited shelf life and some, I say some, organic do have a limited shelf life, check with the manufacturer if in doubt.

Also consider, how and where they are stored, humidity etc.

Ref to PUWER Regs and HSG17.
Organic Bonded Wheels have a shelf life of 3 years from date of manufacture. Manufacturers use by date.

Seamus,

I think I read one of your post's before and I believe you are based in Ireland, if so the Regs you need are S.I. No. 30/1982- Safety in Industry (Abrasive Wheels) Regulations 1982.

There is a good FAQ's page on the HSA website

and you can download the regs on the HSA site aswell
