Hi all

I am hoping someone can offer some advice to help me solve an access problem.

We have 4 identical plant rooms with mezzanine floors suspended at about 15 feet and air con units above the mezzanine floors. The Units have access doors to change fan belts at around 12 feet off the mezz floor. Piping around the A/C unit makes access to the maintenace hatch difficult. obviously we cant use ladders especially on mezz floor and access to the area is through a fixed protected hoop ladder so suitable lifting equipment is out of the question.
The only solution offered at present is a fixed bespoke scaffold but this in itself may make access to other hatchs difficult.

I do not have any experience in this area so any other potential solutions would be welcome.

Kind regards
Faye

Hi,

Have you considered the use of a scissor lift or something like a "man cage" on a suitable FLT? (I can't recall the proper name for the cage thingy!)

Due to the equipment we have in place or maintenance team use such a cage on a Reach truck. If there is "prolonged maintenance required then a scissor lift is hired.

Hope this helps...

Faye,

Why not construct a platform?

Relocate pipework to allow better access?

Lower the units nearer to the mezz' height?

Whats wrong with using ladders/steps?

Why don't I shut up?

Thanks for your responses.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the pipework we cannot re-route it.

Scissor lifts were considered but we could not get them into the area as access is restricted (the only other access is through a fire door and not a good option). Ditto reach trucks. I was hoping someone was aware of a piece of kit that could be operated on a mezz floor as constructing a gantry/walkway would be extremely costly considering the level of access required.

Back to plan A, I fear.

Thanks anyway for your input.

Faye,

If the level of access is low what about controlled ladder access?

There are scissor lifts (e.g. Genie AWP/IWP, GR15 or GR20 and mewps out there which will fit through a standard doorway, and they can be hired by the day.
Another thought is to construct permanent work platforms suspended from the roof, accessed by portable or loft type ladder, but this may be more difficult to justify if maintenance is infrequent.
I have no connection with or interest in Genie or their products.Other access equipment manufacturers and suppliers are available.

power tower is designed to have low superimposed loads on the mezz floor. Try Panther Access
