I am looking for some guidance on fire doors. The concenr I have is that I have several kitchen doors which are obviously fire doors and they do not have vision panels. My concern is that due to the lack of visibility there is a rsik of someone being covered in hot fluid by another person opening the door. I have searched for some relevant guidance without any success. Any opinions on this one would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Andy

Andy a search on this forum under 'Fire Doors' going back at least 6 months will give you a host of quick answers to your problem.

There is nothing to stop you having fire doors with vision panels in them, both are allowed under the building and fire regulations.

Just ensure that the door and its installation are certified to meet the required standards of fire resistance, and smoke seals where required.

Andy,

Get auto door closers fitted or use magnetic locks so doors are held open until the fire alarm activates.

Fitting vision panels does not stop kitchen staff from backing out through a door with a full load of hot food etc.

Andy there are specialist door makers who can build you bespoke fire doors with up to 2 hours integrity,. The vision panel does impact on the performance of the door so make sure that you go to a company that has a test certificate for the size of the vision panel you require. If you get stuck I could give you a number of someone I have used in the past.

Do be careful if fitting door hold open devices (as advised earlier) to a kitchen.

It's usual practice for smoke detection to be fitted either side of any such door

Virtually all kitchens will have heat detection in place which obviously do not detect smoke and operate much later than smoke detectors.

As a result, it is likely that smoke will pass through any held open kitchen door for some time.

It's not impossible, but a full risk assessment will need to take place and a case given to'jusitify' the variation from the usual standard
