Posted By Alan Connolly Can anyone advise me as to where I can find more information on the advised recommended size of a computer monitor for a worker at a desk (8 hours? I've looked up the IOSH book on ergonomics but am looking for more specific information other than lighting, height, distance etc. In manual handling, I advise that the recommended maximum weight for men is 25kg but you must carry out a Risk Assessment etc.... I'd like to be able to advise on the size of a computer screen, while being able to quote a source. Any guidance on links etc would be most appreciated. Alan

Posted By Chris Smith RSP Alan. I may be proved wrong but I am not sure you will find any prescribed sizes for monitors. As an example a CAD operator may need a large screen (or more than one) whilst a data input clerk may only require a smaller screen. My approach would be via a DSE assessment of the users workstation and through discussions with the operator, decide if it serves it's purpose. Chris

Posted By Kirsty Davies2 Alan, There’s no ‘size’ requirements in health and safety law. Monitors come in different sizes and shapes. The requirement is to carry out a display screen equipment assessment for all the DSE users & provide sight tests. Also, there is no maximum weight limit in Manual Handling. This will also depend on your assessment. Kirsty

Posted By holmezy Kirsty is correct... no defined size of screen, this would be dependant on the task and should be suitable etc etc. 25kg was recommended following a study of a repetitive lifting moving the load task 30 times an hour. It's a H+S person who tells Paddy that he can't lift more than 25kg!! being picky I know.... eyesight test to be provided IF requested by employee........ Holmezy

Posted By holmezy or as one employee once said to me when talking about monitors... Men only need 1 but its got to be the biggest and best one, whereas women need many so that they can colour co-ordinate and it must be small enough to fit in their handbag. Since we were discussing DSE at the time, I assume thats what he was on about!! Holmezy

Posted By holmezy Apologies,,,,it should have read; its a brave H+S person who tells Paddy ( or Patrick to his parents) that he can only lift 25kg. Why do you suggest I'm racist? or are you a bit tetchy today? Believe me, if I was racist, then Paddy would have put me right on a few things by now! I play rugby with him and he's actually English but with Irish / Italian parents so I'll let you work that one out. Oh and he does work as a builder. No harm meant! Holmezy
