Posted By warderic Just a quick question please. Where do you think I am likely to find, if any, asbestos in an office building constructed in about 1991 with a tilled roof?. It is my understanding that asbestos was banned in the construction of building from 1985 but continued to be used in asbestos cement for a few more years. I read somewhere that the HSE recommend that an asbestos survey should be carried out on building built before 2000. Many thanks.

Posted By Dave Wilson Blue / Brown banned 85 and uses of white banned end of 1999. So you may have Cement / tiles / gaskets / cloth etc. Legal requirement to have an Asbestos Management plan which could include a survey, normally a type 2 (management survey) in accordance with MDHS100 Hope that helps

Posted By TDsafety Basically, anywhere. I would say that the most likely places are perhaps floor tiles and even any textured wall/ ceiling coatings (artex). If in doubt call a survey team. If it is a council house ask the council for thier register.

Posted By Chris L If it has synthetic roof slates I'd bet 50p on them containing asbestos. As above gaskets, artex, flooring and cement items are all possibles.

Posted By Liz Maw Hello there Asbestos containing material could be anywhere in the structure really - there may have already been a survey carried out so I would look at this first. If not you will need to commission one. It could be in the roof tiles, boiler rooms are classic places too.

Posted By stephen d clarke Hi, The HSE document Asbestos Essentials HSG210 will tell you, excellent diagrams. Regarding roof tiles if lichen are growing on the tiles then they probably contain asbestos. Regards Steve

Posted By Ian Futcher ooh interesting - lichen on roof-tiles. If that's true, then I've learned something today. Ian (Yeah, I know; if I find lichen interesting then I must get out more...)
