again and again i see genuine questions turned into personal attacks. if you think the question is beneath you - dont answer it, but if any of our worthy contributors have ever visited any other H & S forums, they would see the tagline ' theres no such thing as a stupid health and safety question'

what ever happened to the season of goodwill

merry christmas all

I think a lot of people on this thread must have missed the question Warderic was asking if we new of a product for carrying cups upstairs I think they where quite aware of the risk involved

I was really discouraged when I read what some people posted. I believe everyone should be able to ask any question no matter how stupid it looks. If it's beneath you, just read it and leave it instead of posting such rude comments.

I am basically new to health and safety with less than a year experience in the UK and I see myself asking such 'stupid' questions in the near future. The responses here however are making me scared of even trying. Everyone does have an ego and I wouldn't want anyone you bruise mine.

Anyway, we have two buildings separated by a public road and those of us in one building have to cross the road to get tea at the other building which increases the risk. What the company gives everyone is a branded Thermos cup with lids.

ok, lets take it then that walking up and down stairs with a brew in each hand is not an acceptable risk as you might fall and become injured.

I was of the opinion that persons should assume some responsability for thier actions and that using stairs without holding on is not a high risk activity. I accept that there will be casualties but they will be very rare.

I work in construction and we do have a problem. We do not tackle high risk activities correctly. It does not surprise me that our accident stats are a problem. Of the 12 sites I go round there is only my lads trying to work safe. they could fall over with a cuppa but I shall remain focused on hazards with a good probability of an injury. if one of the lads does trip over with his cuppaa, well I may tell to try using his common sense.

apart from that have a good xmas and thank you to all the people who put posts up because it has been of great help throughout 2008.

Hows about we start a petition to ban the building of stairs, smile only joking

What happened to the old saying no question is a stupid question in H&S.

Just goes to show what type of people are out there.

If you have nothing to active to respond, why respond to the post in the first place?????

Is that all you have to worry about at your work is making sly replies on here. Think the tea question is far more worth our attention.

Dear warderic,

1. Suggest you look around large supermarkets/ garden centres/ hardware stores for something like those 3x2 or 4x2 "milk-bottle" carriers with a long free-swinging handle, like milkmen would use to carry bottles to doorsteps. They'd certainly be plastic these days.

2. Also, consider those 'corporate' cups that have lids.

3. Otherwise, a very good project to get stuck into over Christmas?

4. Also consider flasks with handles (such as seen at meetings)- although this might mean 2 trips...

5. Longterm, install tea-making facilities on the same floor.

Admittedly not quite the same issue, on a large site (wayback), our "tea-boy" used for the cups, a rather unsavoury-looking metal milk-crate that he ahd slung with rope to make a carrying belt... [The tea itself being in a metal billycan, by the time he reached our gang, the tea/ coffe was all but cold!]

Regards,

Chris

what about the water dispensers that do hot and cold water but are fed from a bottle.

ok it doesnt get away from the cup washing scenario but removes the carrying hot liquid upstairs hazard.

I know this thread has probably run its course, and warderic has (eventually!) got the ideas / answers he saught but...

The better half works for the emergency services in dispatch (999 calls and the likes). They issue everyone with what I call a 'sippy cup'! These are lidded, thermos styles cups (and, yes trays are available!).

It might seem a tad extreme banning the traditional china cup and saucer (and some posters may claim 'conkers bonkers') but they have justified the decision not just on safety grounds but due to the amount of expensive 999 computer equipment that were previously ruined by spilt drinks!

(They tried banning drinks at desks but found it was impractical as 999 operators on long night shifts at the weekend need their caffeine!!)

Hope you get a solution to your problem.

Merry Christmas All!!!

Joe your remarks are offensive and it is my opinion that people like you should be banned from these discussions. You have no opinion and contribute nothing. I would imagine you are one of those people who have become remarkably brave with the invention of e-mails. Come back when you have something sensible to say.

With that, I think we can now draw the thread to a close as warderic seems to have been able to answer the initial query.

Thread locked under AUG 1.

warderic,

I've just attempted to join in on your tea tray post but its seems its been locked by the moderator...so I've hijacked this one...hope you don't mind everybody:-)

Its just that we had a very similar problem last year at one of our sites...so I know where your coming from and I apologise If I'm repeating what others have said but I have not had time to read through all the threads.

Anyway we ended up putting in a vending machine and the vending company issued the trays, plastic ones which fitted 6 individual cups in 6 individual holes...never had a problem since...only that some people complain about the quality of tea/coffee...but you pls everyone.

Hope you find a solution.

Regards

It really does disappoint me when H&S consultants on here give really really poor advice and make rude comments. Would you tell a client that it is a stupid question and to use common sense????

Anyway just another thought that might be worth taking into account. Is the staircase a main fire route? If so then it may not be advisable having people carrying hot drinks up/down the stairs if a number of people may have to use the route during an evacuation.

Some good and valid points on here. Hope you get the answer you need.

Regards

Paul

Warderic - how long have they been carrying trays of tea upstairs and breaching your own procedure of holding the handrail at the same time?
Why has this bad practice not been noticed before you had the incident?

But surely the manual handling assessment should have picked up on the conflict of the 2 procedures - yes?

I'm a bit late in the game for joining in especially when most of us don't know your individual office layout. All I can offer is what my answer to a similar problem . No beverages except in the designated rest area(Risks slips scalds, falls, asset damage etc.). The beverages are provided by a catering type dispensers - including cold water from catering size water chillers - the supplies for the "stations" are supplied by a catering company who clear clean and "TOP UP" on a regular basis. Beverages are provided in meeting rooms out of the rest area and placed on credenza's - Kitchen /store on each floor.

Happy Christmas or whatever you celebrate at this time of year!
