Do Sikhs have a special dispensation not to wear a "hard hat" on Construction sites, as they have with crash helmets on motor bikes?

Dave is correct, one problem with this is who pays the NHS bill for a head injury to the Sikh because a turban provides minimal protection,I
I personally think they should be made to take out their own insurance when working on site.

This was discussed in another thread a few weeks ago.
I believe that sikhs do have special dispensation, however it could be worthwhile looking into asking them to wear a reduced turban that could accomodate a safety helmet akin to what sikh cricketers wear.
This would be on the condition that they have a private area in which they can change turbans.

Just to try and put this turban thing into prospective. Several years ago I worked with a manager who was a quite high ranking member if the Sikh community, very very nice chap with strong opinions and a wicked sence of humour. We were on a training course at a west country hotel with an indoor swimming pool and it was decided to go swimming. Yes you guessed right the rest of us thought how would he cope with wearing a bathing costum and a turban. Quite exiting really. But there we were the quickest change to swimming gear you have ever seen so no one would miss the revalation. But to all our disappointment he turned up wearing a baseball cap! Being wonderous about this we asked him why the baseball cap. His reply had us in tears of laughter, he explained the turban is traditional and the ruling is that when in public his head had to be covered so the base ball cap was considered to be enough. But and this is the point he had not had his head uncovered in public. he doesnt wear one when at home so he is not braking any religious rules. By the way the turban is generally one of a set made up each week and is fitted just like a hat.

Personally, i strongly believe that religion should not have any role to play in h & s. HSE should not pander to any religious groups for any reason. Everyone should be treated the same. I wonder how one would feel if ones employee seriously injured themselves in the workplace due to such questionable exemptions. I fear that setting precedents like this will only cause resentment from other workers.
How does management deal with this...indemnity form?
