Would anyone know if you need to be a registered optician to conduct an eye check for an HGV driver?
One of my managers was at a Fors meeting yesterday and was told that the police are testing eyesight in the event of a serious accident.
Our stop gap measure is to take the driver in the yard and get them to read a number plate at 20.5 metres (driving test standard)
Is this acceptable? we intend to send anyone who has problems to the opticians>

Turn the question around; should there be a legal issue, would this stand up as a sufficient and suitable check?

I think that the answer is "no". Surely it has to be an eye test by a competent person (probably an optician).

The eyesight requirements for LGV are higher than for car licence, the 20.5m test is not the standard.

see http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/medical/aagv1.pdf for details of the standard.
