Posted By davidlavery Hi, Does anyone Know if using a (TURFER) a piece of work equipment, which has similer caperbility to a whinch, its also used to force re-bar in to position, or prize shutters from newly poured concrete, pull heavey items into position. Does a turfer need any formal training? or any compentcey assesment? to set up or operate this type of work equipment?
I am aware a TURFER is governed by the LOLER REGS
Any advice would be gladly appreciated

Posted By Railroad Hello David, Whatever checks or Inspections you may put in place, the turfer does not come under LOLER but it would be covered under PUWER, similar to say a winch on a recovery truck which would normally pull a horizontal load.

Posted By Bob Youel 'Turfers' can be used to tackle loads in any direction inclusive of human loads
However irrespective of LOLER nor PUWER the use of a 'turfer' requires competence in all circumstances so if courses are available get your people on them if none are available get your competent users trained as trainers and move on from there
For those who have no experience of 'turfers'or the use of steel wire rope 'winless' [spelling?] systems they can be used to pull things [pipes etc] out of their designed alignment for short periods to make repairs etc hence putting extreme stress on such kit so whoever operates such kit should be competent as should SWR snap its a very dangerous situation

A Wire Rope Hoist "Tirfor" is a Lifting Appliance and is Rated to either Lift and or Pull a Load, and are available in three Capacities, therefore, the selection of the correct capacity Tirfor for the Job is vital. Furthermore, the selection of the lifting Gear should be give serious consideration.
Operatives that conduct/undertake Rigging and Lifting Operations should be able to demonstrate a competent level of understanding in the Task Specific requirements within the Method Statement, therefore I would recommend an Induction/Training Program be devised and implemented.

Posted By davidlavery Thanks for all your responses and views on this work equipment query.
Would if be fair for me to conclude that only competent, experienced employees IE Steel Erectors (Riggers) should operate this potentially dangerous piece of work equipment as part of there core skills. And some form of training should be provided to Steel fixers & Joiners who occasionally use this equipment on the project I work on?
Many Thanks Dave

Posted By Alan Nicholls As with all work equipment building site factory etc it is a requirement that only competent persons should operate Mechanical work equipment, unless they are in the process of being instructed trained in the safe use of the equipment by a competent trainer.
