I gave a presentation to year 5 at my son's school last year. I was very happy with how it went, as was the teacher.
The class had just completed a craft project, making Tudor houses out of boxes, bits of wood and other items. They had used saws, a hot glue gun, hammer and nails etc.
I explained what hazard meant and asked them to think of the hazards that were encountered when making their Tudor houses. I then asked them to consider what the consequences could have been if they had not been careful with the hazards. Finally I explained risk and asked the to rank the hazards according to risk. I was absolutely amazed at how they understood the concept, and their ranking was pretty much exactly what I would have come up with.
After that we had a chat about what H&S really means. I said it was not about stopping things just because they may be dangerous, but to help us understand the risks so that we could decide whether they were worth taking. This was a little difficult because one of the class had died a few months earlier in a car accident. However, again the children seemed to really understand the message.
I finished by getting out a load of PPE and getting child to try it on. Normal stuff like hard hats, boots (size 9), gloves (adult), face mask. Also, a bouyancy aid and climbing harness. The children seemed to enjoy that.
Hope that gives you a few ideas.
