Posted By Helen E Please be aware that before reading this thread, it does not constitute an advertisement for a job. I am currently working as a Global Head of Health, Safety and Facilities for my company, and in the near future will need to consider finding suitable temporary cover. What experience do others have for recruitment time for such a position? Did you find that there were generally a handful of competent personnel who would only take on temporary work, or was it difficult to recruit knowing it was for a 6 - 12 month period to cover? I have never recruited for a temporary position previously, so please any information will be useful. Many thanks, Helen

Posted By margaret@SafetyHelp Helen, Last year i took 8 months maternity leave from my post as Head health and safety manager for an international company. It was nearly impossible to recruit somebody competent to fill my shoes, not just for the time period but at all. As a result of my difficulties i used a company called Greenyear (www.greenyear.co.uk) who seem to be switched on and provided me with excellent cover. Hope this helps. M

Posted By Steve M Granger Firstly congrats to whoever it is... Without wanting an answer to be given; It may be prudent to consider any eventuality wrt return date, as intentions do not always materialise themselves. Is it possible to start redefining roles temporarily (I would considering favouring the permanent employees) and removing easier and measurable admin tasks for the period? These will be easier to delegate and track. How about contacting some of the agencies in the SHP and asking them the question? I guess you only get the good stories in terms of quick appointments but it may provide an average for you and your employer to budget against in terms of time and money. There is always the register of consultants to consider here in IOSH as a starting point? Have you considered internal appointment to an aspiring individual? Steve

Posted By Helen E Margaret and Steve, thank you for your messages so far. I have given thought to the differing activities undertaken within the department and am looking to split up the roles and responsibilities of the Facilities section, to only then leave the Health, Safety and Environmental activities to cover. I have considered an internal recruit, but I do not at this stage feel that they are competent to take on the role. I shall start contacting the different recruitment agencies and see what they have to say. Many thanks Helen

Posted By Steve M Granger Have you considered raising this at a Branch meeting? It may be a case of 'No, but I know someone who can...' from members. Other option may be a secondment from a company who need to 'lighten' the pay role temporarily due to the economic climate and a volunteer might be found to make a temporary shift (although this needs careful consideration regarding continuity of service, pension etc etc. Perhaps an early retiree would be more suitable. There are loads of old people in IOSH so it shouldn't be hard finding someone... (I expect a few will be along in a minute complaining as usual...) Hope this has been youthful Steve
