Posted By Steven R Boulter In the dental dept we have a wheelchair for patient use. If a patient needs to use the wheelchair between the car and the surgery, who is responsible for transferring them into the wheelchair from the car, and the reverse, if the escort is unable to? We have a situation where a patient has had a stroke and his wife has damaged her back. We are able to supply the wheelchair, but should our nurses be expected to do the handling/lifting? Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Steve

Posted By Raymond Rapp Steven A difficult one and I suspect there are no right or wrong answers. All I can suggest is that if your staff do assist a patient they should have some sort of training in order to ensure they or the disabled person are not injured unnecessarily. In theory you could get a 20 stone person who needs to use the wheelchair. Would your nurses still able to assist? I suggest you think about a policy which will cover all eventualities, otherwise you may have to insist that the disabled person must have a helper. Ray

Posted By A Campbell Steven, Something to think about is that you are now offering a wheelchair for use by your patients, you should think about it with the view of work equipment and therefore consider inspection, maintenance, training & instruction. Lifting and carrying patients into & out of it is something you may also consider if that is the purpose of supplying it?
