We are about to excavate an area but I have put a stop to it for numerous reasons, one being it has become apparent that there are bones in the soil and other items, making it all contaminated soil.

Would the bones in the soil make it a bio hazard for those involved in the dig. Not known if human, animal or from sunday roast, just been told bones inthe ground.

I know if human then it opens up a whole bag of worms.

Thanks

Until you know how old the deposits are, it's impossible to say. Anything will be safe after 5000 years, but if it's only a few decades there are many viruses which can be hanging on in there, depending on the chemical makeup of the soil.

Associated is the question that if there are random bits of bone, there could be a heap of other things in the deposit (chemical waste etc.) if it's come from a nefarious bit of fly tipping.

Thanks for that Dave, it is on a MOD site and has thrown up some other issues, buried material which looks like asbestos.

Will see what happens.

Mention of the mob makes me wonder if there's a foot and mouth disposal pit on the site (an old one), though they're equally well known for doing a lot of landscaping, and going back to the War they weren't too bothered where the soil came from, so long as it covered the shelters.

Surely if there's any hint of the bones being human, we need need the police in there?
