I am struggling to figure out what is the difference between a ladder and a step? Can anyone make sense of this for me - I am looking at ladder safety and despite looking at numerous pictures and reading numerous definitions - it seems to be the same thing to me. I know this sounds like the dumbest question ever, but if you've not been around trade a lot then things like this can seem tough to comprehend.

A 'step' has a single standing place (think the kicksteps used in shops). A 'ladder' has more than one.

Or do you mean the difference between a ladder, which has to be rested against something, such as a wall, in order to be able to use it, and a step ladder which has two sides, opens out and is self supporting?

Jody,
I recently had to ask the same question. The answer it that a "step" ladder has steps and these are flat and deep with specific dimensions associated. Other ladder rungs are square or round and not that deep which means there is less to stand on and no tread for grip.
Hope this helps

Thank you Dave that's it - don't know why I couldn't figure that out - so simple!
Flic, thank you too, but it was more the difference between steps and ladders which Dave answered - if you look on sites like slingsby they fall under two diff categories - i just could not get my head around it for some reason - probably me just over complicating things unnecessarily!
Best regards, JodyW.

Interesting one; not quite sure myself, but is a step (I assume you mean a step ladder) self supporting, whilst a ladder has to be supported by something else - such as a wall etc

Phil,
Not necessarily... combination ladders are of same step design as normal ladders rungs but can also be used self supporting in some circumstances.
