Posted By warderic I need a couple of pointers please. My company, as part of their portfolio, is in the process of buying a transport/logistics company. As group H&S manager this company will come under my responsibilities. My background is manufacturing and construction, so I need to do some homework into this new area. My question: Are there any H&S people out there with experience of transport and logistics who can point my in the right direction as to the main areas of concern for this type of industry. Many thanks.

Posted By David Bannister Warderic, the HSE website has loads of good information on warehousing and transport and HSE Books too has priced guidance on both subjects. Stating the obvious: vehicles are big and powerful, people are little and vulnerable. Racking is not very strong when hit. Big warehouses have big fires that start small. Tired and distracted drivers are bad. If you use these as staring points I am sure that your previous experience of managing H&S will allow you to discover what is happening at present, whether it is adequate and what if anything you need to change. Good luck. Feel free to make contact if you wish.
