Posted By Kath Tordoff I'm trying to find some up-to-date info on the use of blackberries - more and more of our staff are using them and I'm starting to hear about rumblings about people suffering from "blackberry thumb"! Is there any HSE or similar guidance on using them?

Posted By A Campbell Kath, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4222365.stmmay be of interest? The way I look at it... from personal use?... don't allow use during work time = elimination of the likelihood Used for work... provide a policy & guidance of amount of continual use... where heavy use is required consider a change of model?

Posted By TT Try this guidance document: http://www.ucu.org.uk/me.../c/n/portable_office.pdfIts a free document from the London Chamber of Commerce which ironically appears easier to find elsewhere than on their own website. It covers the use of Blackberries, PDA's, laptops and some of the associated hazards and possible control measures. It may not be HSE approved but its some of the only documented guidance I've ever been able to find that is of any use on this subject.

Posted By TonyB Hi Kath,
Good questions. Very few people recognise that both Blackberries and PDAs constitute DSE equipment, therefore the Regs apply - if people are classified as Users or Operators. (Unlike basic mobile phones - that are not normally classed as DSE equipment due to there short term use)
There use should also be considered when considering if somebody is a User or Operator. I believe that this is going to be a big issue in the near future, so you're ahead of the game.
All the best,
Tony.
