Hi all. I am looking at a way of carrying out DSE awareness training for 50 staff employed in an office environment and what a view on what some people see as adequate. these people are experienced and did not really want to put them through a 4 hour technical course as I think this would be overkill. I have seen the DVD packages that are available and was wondering if putting that on a server so as srtaff can dip in and out to complete would be useful. I would welcome anyones view or experiences of what worked well and what didn't.

Hi Ian,

I use a self assessment form first to see what there understanding is. Point in questions. One of the questions states "Do you know how to clean your screen properly" the amount of employees that put no amazes me even today. From the score that this gives, I do have a link to a website called healthy office which shows what "as best practice" the working environment should be like.

I may be able to send you a copy of the assessment for if you e-mail me, but the website is as follows.

G:\Departments\HR\Health and safety\VDU Questionaire\Safe Office Practice It's a Set-up.htm

A common failing in DSE Assessment process is to challenge the task/process design.
Many of us are either working with poor software or else don't know how to make best and proper use of what we have. This is equally true for basic Microsoft applications & basic Control Panel set-up.
Optimising screen and layout, using shortcuts and keyboard special keys to minimise use of the mouse, making best use of spreadsheet applications, unlearning bad long-handed habits, etc. I know I'm still learning!
Ask your people what training they've had on the software applications they use, and when they last had a refresher.
Equally as important as workstation physical layout, chair adjustments etc.
Rant over - I'll get off my soapbox now!
