My client has a basement with a large gas meter installed adjacent to mains electric coupling (quite old) and there is no ventilation in the area.

Basement is used for archive storage & contains a significant quantity of combustibles. I have recommended fire doors to ensure that a fire will not spread up the staircase or to the boiler house just outside the basement.

I feel unable to recommend actions with regard to safety of gas supply -it would seem prudent to avoid running it through the basement as there is space to pipe the supply directly into the boiler house.

Any comments on formal guidance, gas detection, proximity of electricals, etc. appreciated.

Regards.

Geecee,

There are several matters your client should attend to. Drop me a line and I can give you some direction.

Geecee,

Does the electric coupling generate arcing?

A simple light switch will do that.

Gas pipes through basements don't seem like a great idea. Make certain that a corroded pipe outside the building will not lead to gas entering the basement space.

John.
