Posted By smudge248 I have been asked to survey the racking at my company and they have a messanine floor. No one knows who the original supplier/designer was and they have no plans. Is there any way I can calculate the SWL for the Mezzanine?

You mention the mezzo and racking together? Can I presume then that the installers have built a floor into the existing racking, using the racking system as support?

Posted By smudge248 Thanks for the reply.
They have built a Mezzanine level and have placed Metalsistem racking and standard BSS racking on the decking of the level. I can find out what the SWL/UDL of the individual racks are but am unsure as to the load the Mezzanine level can support. Do I have to calculate the load for each support pillar or is it done by floor area and supports?

Posted By Stewart Hi there
A standard mezzanine floor load notice should display the following information: An area loading in pounds/square foot or preferably Kilonewtons/square metre. It should also show a point loading and the load capacity for any hand-operated pallet trucks being used on it. The calculation of the loadings will depend on the columns, main beams and joists but what is often the most critical structural element is the flooring skin. These loadings could be calculated by the manufacturers/supplier of the floor, a structural engineer or other storage equipment survey specialist. I work for a company called Storage Equipment Safety Service which is the latter. If you would like any further information you can find us on-line with a simple Google search on “rack safety inspections”. Hope this is some help.

If you are not a structural engineer don't even bother trying to calaculate SWL of the floor. This is a job for the expert. Contact the supplier/installer and ask for the information.
