Is there anybody out there who could help me on the issue of warehouse rack?

Firstly, do we as a warehouse have to have inspection certificates.

Next, are safe loading plates compulsory on rows of racking.

Any help or guidance in the right direction would be grateful.

Hi Dejay, the short answer is yes on both counts. Refer to www.sess.co.uk or contact stewart@sess.co.uk for further specific advice. Michael

Hi Dejay,

Although corsa01 is right in part, it would depend on what you call racking and what is being stored in repsect of loading plates.

If the loads are palletised then yes to all the above. If and like ourselves and it is for storage of substantially lighter items and non palletised then no.

With regards racking inspections etc. this would depened on whether FLT's are being operated around that area and if they are likely to come into contact, in that repsect then yes.

It may seem confusing to some but your initial assessment should determine what is required.

Thanks

Charlie

Hi Dejay

Generally EHOs consider racking as work equipment and will usually ask if you have the racking inspected regularly. The specifics for inspections are indicated in the Storage Equipment Manufacturers (SEMA) user’s code, FEM and EN. EHOs will also usually comment on the provision of safe working load data displayed on the storage equipment. What Charlie says is generally right, where you are storing palletised goods the loads are considerably heavier necessitating the need for load data. Damage levels will be higher and more serious from mechanical handling equipment operation necessitating more the need for inspection. However, in my experience I have inspected warehouses and provided load notices for hand-loaded shelving sites before and this has sometimes been on request form an EHO.

Hope this is some help to you.

This is the HSE website where you can get the appropriate information for the advice on racking Might be of some use.
The other way is to ask the company who's racks they are to come in and give you some advice as to what is required.
