Posted By Robert_N HI All, We are reviewing our prohibited items list and have become grounded on the issue of Scarves that are worn for religious reasons, it was said we can only ask them to warm them in a safe way but we could not agree on a safe way. I understand that a Sikh can be asked to not ware his turban following permission from his Temple but would this be the same? Please let me know if anyone has come across this? Many thanks

Posted By safetyamateur I expected this to be machinery-related. What's the risk, Robert, fire? Does warming a nice cardie give rise to a similar risk?

Posted By Coshh Assessor What is the justification for prohibiting the scarves (I assume you mean headscarves)?

Posted By ScotsAM Consider the employee wearing a scarf for a religious reason working with machinery which states as part of manufacturers instruction that no loose clothing should be worn.

Posted By Coshh Assessor A prohibition on loose clothing need not mean a prohibition on all headscarves - only on loose ones!

Posted By Tabs There should be very few instances where a scarf would pose an entanglement risk (maybe very long ones in strimmers or lawn mowers, shredding machines in office) but most should be capable of being used if the wearer of the scarf secures the loose ends.

Posted By Robert_N If we were to allow scarves to be worn as long as the loose ends were secured but then if something was to happen that the loose end came unsecured would this be looked on as we didn't take reasonable steps? The scaves are not the head dress type.

Posted By Tabs Short answer is no. You would be expected to show the same reasonable care as you do all other types of clothing though. An answer might be to allow the scarf under an overall or apron - two garments specifically designed to protect and constrain clothing.

Posted By Yossarian Robert, What is the working environment you are considering here? The reason I ask is I can think of no justifiable reason to blanket ban scarves on health & safety grounds in say a library, whereas I can think of a few reasons for such a ban in a woodworking shop or food store.

Posted By Ian Blenkharn I'm sure Isadora Duncan would agree that wearing long loose scarves is not free from risk. Neckties are just as bad. Years ago, I watched my then Head of Department get the tip of his tie caught in a paper shredder, and a hotel manager trapped his tie in the drawer of a cash till that was pulled from the counter top when he turned to walk away. His face was a particularly strange colour - a dramatic mix of purple from the pressure around his neck, and red from embarrassment. I still smile about both events.

Posted By Coshh Assessor So can you control the risk by putting some other clothing over the scarf as Tabs suggested?
