Hi
While developing a SSOW for excavating foundations with regard to service strikes(Service identification / location / isolation / hand digging /CAT and Genny scanning/etc)I have been asked by a member of the client team to also provide an earthing rod for the excavator during the work as "back up"
I've never come across this before and In my opinion this is not workable on many levels due to mobility issues of a tracked excavator with a 360 degree slew and the fact the excavator does not have an actual earthing point to fix to.
I'm speaking to the excavator manufacturer on the earthing/grounding of the machine through the tracks themselves.
However, has any one heard of a tracked excavator being earthed by a rod driven into the ground and connected by cable while carrying out excavations.
Please no replies on dealing with the client, just earthing of excavators please.

Hi Peter, i have been in const. h and s for 20 years and have never seen / been asked to earth an excavator, if it strikes a cable the current will go stright to earth anyway via the ground contact.
prevention = finding out about buried services before you start, then safe excavating / digging techniques depending on your assessment of the danger / hazard
if someone is stating the hazard is from the equipments electrics, what about our own cars

Yes agree
Have also just been told that the excavator cab is electrically isolated from the excavator body but checking that up with manufacturer.

Hi Peter
The cab will be OK. Standard guidance is for driver to stay in cab in the event of a cable strike until electricity isolated and for anyone else to keep away from the metalwork of the excavator.
